It grows 40 to 70 feet tall with irregular, twisted branches, thick scaly bark, and dark green needles in clusters of three, and is one of the few pines able to sprout needles directly from its trunk.

Application

Pine Barrens and dry, sandy, acidic soil restoration - dominant native species

Reforestation and naturalization on sites where other species won't establish

Fire-adapted and fire-recovery plantings

Coastal and barrens plantings tolerant of poor, salty soils

Growing Conditions / Specification Data

Light: Full Sun

Soil/Moisture Tolerance: Dry, sandy, poor, acidic soils; also tolerates salty soils

Drought Tolerance: High

Flood Tolerance: Low - A dry, sandy-soil Pine Barrens species; not tolerant of standing water.

Plant Type: Tree

Mature Height: 25-50 ft.

Fall Color: Insignificant/None - evergreen conifer

Wetland Indicator Status: NI (No Indicator) - see flags

Native Range: Northeast/Mid-Atlantic (full list)

Pollinator Value: None significant - wind-pollinated conifer; cones and pollen offer no meaningful nectar or pollen resource to insects.

Hydrology: Dry-Mesic

Root Depth: Deep (24-36 in.)

Salinity Tolerance: Low

Growth Rate: Rapid (gains ~12 in. of height per year when young, until growth slows at 50-60 years)

Deer Resistance: Some

Growth Habit: Upright

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-7

Planting Guidance

One of the few pines capable of sprouting needles directly from the trunk and regenerating from basal sprouts after fire - a genuinely rare trait among pines, and the reason it dominates the fire-prone Pine Barrens landscape.
