Description

Acer negundo, commonly known as boxelder or ash-leaved maple, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to North America. It typically grows 30 to 50 feet tall with an irregular, rounded crown and often a short trunk that can divide into multiple stems. Unlike most maples, boxelder has compound leaves with three to seven leaflets, giving it a resemblance to ash trees. In early spring, it produces clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers, followed by paired winged seeds (samaras) that persist into winter.

Boxelder is highly adaptable, thriving in a wide range of conditions, from wet floodplains to dry, disturbed areas. It is often used for erosion control and as a pioneer species in reforestation projects. While its wood is soft and not as commercially valuable as other maples, it is sometimes used for pulp or small crafts. Ecologically, Acer negundo provides food and habitat for birds and insects. Though it is not typically planted for ornamental purposes, its rapid growth and hardiness make it useful in naturalized and restoration settings. However, it is considered weedy in some regions due to its tendency to self-seed aggressively.
