Description

Acer saccharinum, commonly known as silver maple, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to eastern and central North America. It typically reaches heights of 50 to 80 feet with a broad, rounded to irregular crown and arching branches. Silver maple is named for the silvery underside of its deeply lobed, light green leaves, which shimmer in the wind. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it produces small clusters of yellow-green to red flowers, followed by large paired winged seeds (samaras) that mature quickly. Its bark starts smooth and gray but becomes shaggy and furrowed with age.

Silver maple is highly adaptable, thriving in moist soils along riverbanks, floodplains, and wetlands, but it can also tolerate drier conditions. Known for its rapid growth, it is often planted as a shade tree, although its brittle wood and shallow roots can make it susceptible to storm damage and infrastructure interference. Ecologically, Acer saccharinum is an important species for stabilizing streambanks and providing habitat for wildlife. Its wood is used for low-grade lumber and pulp, and its sap can be tapped for syrup production, though it is less sweet than sugar maple sap. Silver maple’s resilience and adaptability make it a valuable but sometimes controversial species in both natural and urban landscapes.
