Description

Acorus americanus, or Sweetflag, is a wetland perennial native to North America, thriving in marshes, along riverbanks, and in wet meadows. Recognized by its sword-like, fragrant foliage, this plant produces inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers on cylindrical spikes in late spring to early summer. Sweetflag spreads via rhizomes, creating dense stands that stabilize soil and prevent erosion in riparian zones.

Aside from its ecological benefits, Sweetflag has a long history of use in indigenous medicine and as an aromatic addition to homes. Its leaves release a sweet, spicy scent when crushed, and its roots were traditionally used to treat digestive issues. In landscapes, it is a valuable addition to rain gardens or pond edges, where its tolerance for wet soils and ability to filter water are particularly beneficial.
