Description

Carpinus caroliniana, commonly known as American hornbeam, is a small, deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It typically grows 20€“35 feet tall with a rounded, spreading crown and thrives in moist, shaded areas, such as along streams and in woodlands. The tree is often called €œmusclewood€ due to its smooth, gray bark that appears rippled like muscles. Its dark green leaves are simple and serrated, turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall, making it a standout in natural and landscaped settings.

This tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, followed by clusters of winged nutlets that mature in late summer. These seeds provide a food source for birds and small mammals. American hornbeam is highly adaptable, tolerating a range of soil conditions, and is often used in restoration projects, as a street tree, or as an understory plant. It is also valued for its resistance to pests and diseases, as well as its ability to thrive in low-light environments.
