Description

Commonly known as buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis is a deciduous shrub native to wetlands across North America. It grows 6 to 12 feet tall and is distinguished by its spherical flower clusters, which bloom in summer and attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The shrub thrives in wet soils and is often found along streambanks, ponds, and marshes. Its dense growth provides excellent cover for birds, while its seeds are eaten by waterfowl. Buttonbush is a valuable addition to rain gardens, wetland restoration projects, and pollinator gardens.
