Description
Geranium maculatum, commonly known as spotted Geranium or Cranesbill, is a clump-forming perennial native to eastern North America. It belongs to the Geraniaceae family and is commonly found in woodlands, meadows, and shaded roadsides. This plant features deeply lobed, green leaves and delicate, five-petaled lavender to pink flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its name €œCranesbill€ refers to the shape of its seed capsules, which resemble a crane€™s bill. Wild Geranium has also been historically used in traditional medicine for its astringent properties.
Adaptable and easy to grow, Geranium maculatum prefers rich, well-drained soils in partial to full shade but can tolerate some sun with sufficient moisture. It spreads slowly through rhizomes, forming attractive ground cover over time, and is particularly useful for naturalizing woodland gardens. This plant is deer-resistant and can coexist with other shade-loving native plants, making it a practical choice for ecological landscaping. Its ability to stabilize soil and attract beneficial insects further enhances its value in restoration and conservation efforts.
