Description

Liquidambar styraciflua, or sweetgum, is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States. It grows up to 75–100 feet tall with a symmetrical, pyramidal form. Its star-shaped leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall. The tree produces distinctive, spiky seed pods known as “gumballs.” Sweetgum prefers moist, acidic soils and is often found in bottomlands and swamps. Its wood is used for furniture and veneers, while its resin was historically used in medicines and adhesives.
