Description
Mertensia virginica, or Virginia Bluebells, is a spring ephemeral wildflower native to moist woodlands in eastern North America. It produces clusters of bell-shaped, light blue flowers that emerge from pink buds in early to mid-spring. The foliage is smooth, oval, and gray-green, dying back by early summer.
This species thrives in rich, well-drained soils in partial to full shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens. Its blooms attract early-season pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, and it complements other spring wildflowers like trilliums and bleeding hearts.
