Description

Nuphar lutea, commonly known as the yellow water lily or spatterdock, is an aquatic perennial native to ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers in North America. It has large, heart-shaped leaves that float on the water€™s surface and can grow up to 12€“24 inches in diameter. The plant produces bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer, which are held above the water on stout stems.

Yellow water lily is valuable for stabilizing pond and lake shores and providing habitat for aquatic wildlife. Its leaves help reduce water evaporation and create shade, which can inhibit the growth of unwanted algae. The plant€™s seeds and tubers are also a food source for fish and waterfowl. Its presence contributes to the aesthetic and ecological health of aquatic ecosystems.
