Description

Pinus echinata, commonly known as Shortleaf Pine, is a native evergreen conifer found throughout the southeastern United States. It typically grows 50€“100 feet tall and features a straight trunk with a narrow, conical crown that becomes more rounded with age. Its needles are slender, flexible, and arranged in clusters of two or three, measuring 3€“5 inches long. The tree produces small, reddish-brown cones about 1.5€“2.5 inches in length, which are armed with a tiny, sharp prickle (hence €œechinata,€ meaning spiny).

Shortleaf Pine is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, thriving in dry, sandy, or rocky soils and tolerating poor conditions better than many other pines. It plays a significant ecological role, providing habitat and food for wildlife such as birds and squirrels. It is also valued in the timber industry for its high-quality wood used in construction, paper production, and furniture. Its resilience, adaptability, and long lifespan make it a key species for forest restoration and conservation projects in its native range.
