Description

Blackjack oak is a small, rugged tree (20-50 feet tall) native to the southeastern United States. It is well-suited to dry, sandy, or rocky soils, often in poor, degraded areas. Its thick, leathery leaves have 3-5 rounded lobes and are dark green above with a rusty underside. The bark is rough and nearly black, and its small acorns are an important food source for wildlife.

Although not valued for timber, blackjack oak plays an important ecological role by thriving in challenging environments where other trees cannot. It provides cover and food for birds, mammals, and insects and is often a component of oak savannas and scrub habitats.
