Description

Pin oak is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to the eastern and central United States, growing to heights of 50-70 feet with a pyramidal shape when young, becoming more open and spreading with age. It is commonly found in wet bottomlands, floodplains, and poorly drained soils, thriving in acidic, moist environments. The tree is characterized by its deeply lobed leaves with 5-7 pointed lobes, brilliant red fall foliage, and smooth gray-brown bark that becomes slightly furrowed with age. Its acorns, which mature in two years, are small and round, providing a food source for wildlife such as ducks, deer, and squirrels.

Pin oak is widely planted as an ornamental tree due to its rapid growth, adaptability, and attractive appearance. It tolerates urban conditions, including compacted soils and air pollution, making it a popular choice for street and park plantings. Ecologically, it is valuable in wetland restoration projects, stabilizing soils and providing habitat and food for a variety of wildlife. Its wood, while not as strong as other oaks, is used for general construction, pallets, and fuel.
