Description

Chestnut oak, also called rock oak, is a medium to large deciduous tree that typically grows 50-70 feet tall, though it can reach heights of 100 feet in optimal conditions. Native to eastern North America, this species thrives on rocky ridges, dry slopes, and well-drained upland soils, often dominating Appalachian forests. Its leaves are simple, oblong, and toothed, resembling those of the American chestnut. The bark is dark brown to black, deeply ridged, and rich in tannins, historically used in leather tanning.

Ecologically, chestnut oak plays a vital role in supporting wildlife. Its large, sweet acorns provide an important food source for deer, turkeys, squirrels, and other forest animals. The species is also valued for its hard, durable wood, which is used for fencing, railroad ties, and fuel. It is well-suited for dry, rocky areas, making it a critical stabilizing species in forest ecosystems.
