Description

Rhus typhina is a deciduous small tree native to eastern North America, including New Jersey. It grows 15 to 30 feet tall and is easily recognized by its velvety, reddish-brown branches that resemble deer antlers in velvet, hence the name €œstaghorn.€ The compound leaves are bright green and turn brilliant red, orange, and yellow in fall, making it a stunning ornamental plant. Staghorn sumac produces dense clusters of fuzzy red fruits (drupes) that persist into winter and provide food for wildlife such as birds. It thrives in dry, well-drained soils and is often found in disturbed areas, roadsides, and forest edges.

This species is dioecious, with male and female flowers forming on separate plants. The small, yellow-green flowers bloom in mid to late summer, attracting pollinators such as bees. Staghorn sumac spreads aggressively through suckers, forming large colonies, and plays an important ecological role in stabilizing soil and providing cover for wildlife. It is drought-tolerant and adaptable, making it a valuable species for ecological restoration and erosion control.
