Description

Rosa palustris, or swamp rose, is a native, deciduous shrub found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and stream banks throughout eastern North America. It typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall, forming arching canes covered with small thorns. In mid to late summer, it produces clusters of fragrant, pink, five-petaled flowers that are attractive to pollinators, especially bees. Following flowering, bright red rose hips develop, persisting into winter and providing food for birds and small mammals.

This rose is highly tolerant of wet conditions and prefers acidic to neutral soils. Its dense growth habit provides valuable cover and nesting habitat for wildlife. Swamp rose is commonly used in wetland restoration projects and native plant gardens for its ability to stabilize soil and improve habitat diversity. It is a beautiful and ecologically important addition to any wetland area.
