Description

Salix nigra, or black willow, is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It can reach heights of 30 to 60 feet and thrives in wet soils, often found along streams, rivers, and wetlands. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves provide shade, and its dense root system is excellent for stabilizing stream banks and preventing erosion.

This willow produces inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in spring, which are wind-pollinated. Black willow is a keystone species in wetland ecosystems, offering critical habitat for birds, mammals, and insects. Its adaptability and ecological importance make it a valuable tree for restoration projects, riparian buffers, and wetland landscaping.
