Description

Sambucus canadensis, commonly known as American elderberry, is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub native to wetlands, stream banks, and forest edges in eastern North America. It grows 5 to 12 feet tall and produces large clusters of creamy-white flowers in late spring to early summer. These flowers are followed by small, dark purple to black berries in late summer, which are highly valuable to birds and can also be used to make jams, wines, and syrups.

This shrub thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is adaptable to a variety of conditions. It is often used in native landscaping for its ecological value, as it supports pollinators, provides wildlife habitat, and stabilizes soil in riparian areas. Elderberry€™s fast growth and ability to form dense thickets make it a popular choice for naturalized plantings and erosion control projects.
