Description

Vaccinium corymbosum, or highbush blueberry, is a native deciduous shrub that grows 6 to 12 feet tall. It thrives in acidic, moist soils and is commonly found in wetlands, forest edges, and swamps across eastern North America. In spring, it produces clusters of bell-shaped white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By summer, the plant yields large, sweet blue berries, which are enjoyed by birds, mammals, and humans.

Highbush blueberry also offers exceptional ornamental value, with deep green foliage turning vibrant red, orange, or yellow in the fall. Its ability to tolerate wet conditions makes it an ideal choice for rain gardens, wetland restoration, and native landscaping. This plant is a cornerstone of the New Jersey Pine Barrens and other ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity and ecological health.
