Description

Amelanchier canadensis, commonly known as Canada serviceberry or shadblow serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. It typically grows 6 to 20 feet tall and is prized for its multi-season interest. In early spring, it produces clusters of fragrant, white, five-petaled flowers that bloom before the leaves emerge, marking the seasonal arrival of shad spawning (hence the common name “shadblow”). The flowers give way to small, sweet, dark purple berries in early summer, which are edible and highly attractive to birds and wildlife. Its oval, finely toothed leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall.

Canada serviceberry thrives in moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate partial shade, making it ideal for woodland edges, gardens, and naturalized landscapes. It is an important plant for pollinators and serves as a larval host for butterflies. The berries, often compared to blueberries, can be used in pies, jams, and desserts. Amelanchier canadensis is also valued for its adaptability, low maintenance, and ornamental appeal, making it a popular choice for both restoration projects and residential landscapes.
