Description

Comptonia peregrina, commonly known as sweetfern, is a deciduous shrub native to sandy and acidic soils in eastern North America. Despite its name, sweetfern is not a fern but a member of the bayberry family (Myricaceae). It typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall and spreads through rhizomes, forming low, dense colonies. The plant is easily recognized by its narrow, deeply lobed, aromatic leaves that resemble fern fronds. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellowish-green catkins, followed by small, burr-like fruits in late summer. The foliage emits a pleasant, sweet fragrance when touched or crushed, adding to its charm.

Sweetfern is highly valued for its adaptability and role in ecological restoration. It thrives in dry, nutrient-poor soils, making it an excellent choice for stabilizing sandy slopes and disturbed sites. As a nitrogen-fixing species, it improves soil quality, benefiting surrounding plants. Comptonia peregrina is also drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it a popular choice for naturalized landscapes and pollinator gardens. Its dense growth habit provides cover for small wildlife, and its aromatic leaves have been traditionally used for medicinal and aromatic purposes.
