Designed specifically for the edges of ponds, impoundments, and swampy ground, this mix leans heavily on wetland-obligate grasses and sedges to build the nesting and foraging habitat waterfowl depend on.

Mix Overview

Fox sedge, Virginia wild-rye, shallow sedge, and deertongue grass make up the structural core of this blend, chosen specifically for their obligate wetland habitat and their value as waterfowl nesting cover and foraging grounds. Soft rush, hop sedge, and woolgrass round out the grass-and-sedge base, while swamp milkweed, coastal plain Joe-Pye weed, swamp rose-mallow, and New York ironweed add wildlife and pollinator value along the margins. For a fuller aquatic planting, this mix pairs well with true emergent aquatic plugs like spikerush, duck potato, yellow pond lily, and pickerelweed planted directly into standing water.

Application

  • Pond and impoundment edge plantings
  • Waterfowl nesting and foraging habitat restoration
  • Swampy or seasonally flooded ground unsuitable for upland mixes
  • Wetland mitigation and stormwater basin plantings with a wildlife focus

Growing Conditions / Specification Data

  • Light: Full Sun to Part Shade
  • Site Conditions: Wet to saturated soils; suited to pond edges and swampy ground
  • Recommended Seeding Rate: 15 lbs. per acre
  • Mix Type: Native wetland grass and sedge blend, obligate-wetland-forward

Planting Guidance

Best seeded into a prepared, weed-free seedbed in spring or late fall on sites that stay consistently wet. Light raking or rolling after seeding improves soil-to-seed contact. Consider interplanting with emergent aquatic plugs for standing-water areas this seed mix cannot establish in directly.

Please allow 3 business days for all seed orders.
