A hardy, no-frills wildlife planting for dry, well-drained upland sites, built to deliver winter cover, nesting habitat, and food sources with minimal establishment fuss.
Mix Overview
Big bluestem and Virginia wild-rye provide the bulk of the structural cover in this mix, with purple lovegrass adding additional grass diversity suited to dry, sandy conditions. Common milkweed, purple coneflower, wild bergamot, dense blazing star, and rattlesnake master round out the forb component, adding food and pollinator value without asking more of the site than dry, well-drained soil can reliably support.
Application
- Wildlife habitat restoration on dry, well-drained upland sites
- Field border and buffer plantings in sandy or drought-prone areas
- Conservation plantings where site conditions rule out a moisture-dependent mix
- General-purpose upland wildlife cover and forage
Growing Conditions / Specification Data

Broadcast or drill seed into a prepared, weed-free seedbed in spring or late fall. Light raking or rolling after seeding improves soil-to-seed contact. Leave standing through winter to preserve cover and food value.
