Purpose-built for heavy clay soil with little topsoil, this mix relies on deep-rooted natives that need minimal watering and minimal maintenance once established.
Mix Overview
Big bluestem, Virginia wild-rye, and switchgrass provide a deep-rooted structural base capable of working through compacted clay, paired with purple coneflower, false sunflower, dense blazing star, wild bergamot, and black-eyed Susan for pollinator and wildlife value. The deep root systems that make this mix suited to clay also do the double duty of improving soil structure and infiltration over time.
Application
- Plantings on heavy clay soil with little to no topsoil
- Sites where minimal irrigation is available after establishment
- Pollinator and wildlife habitat on compacted or poor-drainage soils
- Restoration of disturbed sites with clay-dominated subsoil exposed
Growing Conditions / Specification Data
- Light: Full Sun to Part Shade
- Site Conditions: Heavy clay soils; low fertility, minimal topsoil
- Recommended Seeding Rate: 20 lbs. per acre
- Mix Type: Deep-rooted native wildflower and grass blend for clay soils
Planting Guidance
Best seeded in fall to allow deep-rooted perennials to establish before the following growing season. Broadcast or drill into a prepared, weed-free seedbed; light raking or rolling improves soil-to-seed contact. Expect minimal watering needs once established.
Please allow 3 business days for all seed orders.
