More information on the 2027 crop to come

One of the fastest-establishing native shade trees available, silver maple is a strong fit for floodplain restoration and streambank stabilization projects where rapid canopy coverage matters more than long-term structural longevity.

Species Overview

Acer saccharinum, commonly known as silver maple, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to eastern and central North America. It typically reaches heights of 50 to 80 feet with a broad, rounded to irregular crown and arching branches. Silver maple is named for the silvery underside of its deeply lobed, light green leaves, which shimmer in the wind. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it produces small clusters of yellow-green to red flowers, followed by large paired winged seeds (samaras) that mature quickly.

Application

  • Floodplain and riparian restoration - tolerates standing water for extended periods
  • Streambank stabilization
  • Rapid-canopy reforestation and reclamation projects
  • Wildlife habitat plantings
  • Shade tree specification where fast establishment is the priority over long-term wood strength

Growing Conditions / Specification Data

  • Light: Full Sun
  • Soil/Moisture Tolerance: Highly adaptable; thrives in moist soils along riverbanks, floodplains, and wetlands, but also tolerates drier conditions
  • Drought Tolerance: High
  • Flood Tolerance: High - Tolerates prolonged inundation, particularly during the dormant season; used in greentree reservoir systems that are deliberately flooded through winter and drained before spring growth begins.
  • Salinity Tolerance: Moderate (both soil and aerosol salt tolerance)
  • Growth Rate: Rapid
  • Growth Habit: Tree with broad, rounded to irregular crown and arching branches; brittle wood and shallow roots
  • Mature Height: 50-80 ft.
  • Fall Color: Yellow, Brown, Green (combination)
  • Bloom Color / Period: Yellow-green to red; February-April, before leaf-out
  • Wetland Indicator Status: FAC (Facultative) - Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain region
  • Native Range: Eastern and central North America, from southeastern Canada south to Florida and west into the Great Plains.
  • Hydrology: Moist-Wet
  • Root Depth: Shallow (Under 12 in.)
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3-9
  • Pollinator Value: Supports bees (species-confirmed - NC State Extension: bee friendly, pollinator plant, nectar plant); keystone larval host - documented host plant for 270+ Lepidoptera species including eastern tiger swallowtail, luna moth, and mourning cloak butterfly
  • Shade Tolerance: Tolerant - grows full sun to shade
  • Deer Resistance: Some (Occasionally Severely Damaged) - per Rutgers Landscape Plants Rated by Deer Resistance
