One of the earliest nectar sources in the spring landscape, shadbush combines four-season ornamental interest with genuine wildlife value - an early pollinator lifeline, summer bird-food berries, and reliable fall color, all from a shrub that tolerates both wet and upland restoration sites.
Species Overview
Amelanchier canadensis, commonly known as Canada serviceberry or shadblow serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. It typically grows 6 to 20 feet tall and is prized for its multi-season interest. In early spring, it produces clusters of fragrant, white, five-petaled flowers that bloom before the leaves emerge, marking the seasonal arrival of shad spawning (hence the common name shadbush). The flowers give way to small, sweet, dark purple berries in early summer, which are edible and highly attractive to birds and wildlife.
Application
- Wetland-edge and riparian restoration (FAC species - tolerates both moist and drier upland sites)
- Woodland edge and understory plantings
- Wildlife habitat plantings - early-season pollinator nectar and summer bird-food fruit
- Naturalized and native landscape plantings prioritizing multi-season interest
- Pollinator gardens, particularly for early-spring bee and butterfly forage
