A distinctive, low-maintenance understory tree valued as much for its sinewy "musclewood" bark as its fall color, ironwood is a strong specification choice for shaded restoration sites and streambanks where its tolerance for periodic flooding and genuine deer resistance both matter.
Species Overview
Carpinus caroliniana, commonly known as American hornbeam, is a small, deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It typically grows 20 to 35 feet tall with a rounded, spreading crown and thrives in moist, shaded areas, such as along streams and in woodlands. The tree is often called "musclewood" due to its smooth, gray bark that appears rippled like muscles. Its dark green leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall.
Application
- Understory and woodland restoration in moist, shaded sites
- Streambank and riparian buffer plantings - tolerates periodic flooding
- Shade tree and street tree specification where a smaller-stature tree is needed
- Larval host habitat for Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Striped Hairstreak, and Red-spotted Purple butterflies
- Deer-pressured woodland sites
