One of the few ornamental grasses that genuinely thrives in moderate shade, tufted hairgrass pairs confirmed black walnut tolerance with real larval host value for the Umber Skipper butterfly - a strong choice for moist, partially shaded restoration sites.

Species Overview

Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly known as tufted hairgrass, is a perennial cool-season grass in the Poaceae family. Native to a wide range of habitats across the Northern Hemisphere, including wetlands, meadows, and coastal areas, this grass is highly adaptable to various soil types, from sandy to clay, as long as they are moist. In late spring to early summer, it produces airy, elegant panicles of delicate, purplish to golden flowers that rise well above the foliage.

  • Streambank and shoreline stabilization on consistently moist sites
  • Rain garden and seasonally flooded site plantings
  • Sites near black walnut, given confirmed juglone tolerance
  • Larval host habitat for the Umber Skipper butterfly
