A genuine four-season shrub, oakleaf hydrangea pairs a long-lasting cone-shaped bloom display with some of the best fall foliage color of any native shrub - though its native range is concentrated in the Southeast, so it's worth a deliberate look before treating it as regionally native to New Jersey plantings.
Species Overview
Hydrangea quercifolia, or oakleaf hydrangea, is an upright, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States. Its large, deeply lobed leaves resemble oak foliage and turn vivid shades of red, purple, and bronze in fall. Cone-shaped flower panicles emerge creamy white in early summer and age through pink to a dusty, papery tan by winter, and cinnamon-brown exfoliating bark adds further seasonal interest.
