A genuinely versatile wetland perennial, blue flag iris tolerates both full submergence and brackish water, delivering a strikingly showy bloom that draws hummingbirds and bumblebees alike - while its toxic, starch-rich rhizomes are avoided by deer entirely.

Species Overview

Iris versicolor, or blue flag iris, is an upright, native perennial wildflower typically found near wetlands, on creek or pond margins, or in any wet, low-lying area. Reaching a height of up to three feet, it forms clumps of bright green, grass-like foliage that produces striking blue-purple blooms with yellow accents in late spring and early summer.

Application

  • Wetland restoration - tolerates full submergence and brackish water
  • Pond-edge, streambank, and rain garden plantings
  • Deer-pressured sites
  • Pollinator and hummingbird habitat
