A genuine biodiversity workhorse, ninebark is documented to host at least five named moth species - including the striking Io moth - and draws both short- and long-tongued bees including mining bee specialists, though it's worth knowing this species is explicitly not deer resistant.
Species Overview
Physocarpus opulifolius, or common ninebark, is a fast-growing, upright deciduous shrub native to central and eastern North America, reaching 5 to 10 feet tall with an arching, fountain-like habit. Clusters of white to pink, spirea-like flowers appear in late spring, followed by drooping clusters of reddish-pink seed capsules, with the shrub's exfoliating bark revealing layered reddish to light brown inner bark for winter interest.
Application
- Mixed shrub borders, hedges, and screens - fast growing, year-round interest
- Erosion control on banks and slopes
- Larval host habitat for the Io moth and four other named moth species
- Habitat islands and privacy plantings
