Description

Tephrosia virginiana (Goat’s Rue) is a perennial herbaceous legume native to eastern and central North America. It typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and features soft, silvery-green pinnately compound leaves and showy bicolor flowers that resemble those of peas, with pinkish-purple upper petals and pale yellow lower petals. Blooming from late spring to early summer (May–July), this nitrogen-fixing species thrives in dry, sandy, or rocky soils and is often found in prairies, open woods, and barrens. Its deep taproot allows it to tolerate drought and poor soils, making it well-suited for restoration projects and native plant gardens focused on difficult sites.

Tephrosia virginiana plays an important ecological role by enriching the soil through nitrogen fixation and providing nectar for bees and other pollinators. While it is not a major food source for herbivores due to its toxic compounds (notably rotenone), it contributes to the biodiversity and structure of native dryland plant communities. This species requires full sun and well-drained soils to thrive and is best used in naturalistic plantings, xeriscapes, or habitat restoration projects where low fertility and dry conditions are present.
